San Gerardo de Dota

San Gerardo de Dota is located in the Talamanca Mountains between Cartago and San Isidro de El General in the direction of the Pacific. The area enjoys a mild, temperate climate with cool temperatures and frequent misty or rainy conditions due to its elevation of approximately 2,200 meters (ca. 7,218 feet) above sea level.

I have passed San Gerardo de Dota several times on my way back from the Pacific to the place I was living near Cartago. Making a few stops to witness the amazing views from the mountains towards the Pacific coast with breathtaking sunsets. Los Quetzales National Park I never visited, though, but it is recommended by other travelers as a great stop on the way back to San José and a great opportunity to enjoy the cloud forest and maybe spot the quetzal, one of the most iconic birds of Costa Rica.

Los Quetzales National Park

Los Quetzales National Park is adjacent to and encompasses much of the San Gerardo de Dota area. It was established in 2005 to protect the region's cloud forests and diverse wildlife. There are several well-marked hiking trails within Los Quetzales National Park, varying in difficulty. These trails provide opportunities to explore the pristine cloud forests, rivers, waterfalls, and scenic viewpoints. Some popular trails include the Quetzal Trail and the Savegre River Trail.
